Asha Toure
My name is Asha Toure, I am 24 years and proud to call myself a woman with a disability. My injury occurred back in 2010 from a car accident which paralyzed me from the waist down. The doctor told me that I would never be able to walk again but I was hell bent on proving them wrong, so that's exactly what I did. Today, I am able to get around independently with my chair and walking with assertive devices. What empowers me most in life is the fact that everyone wants to be in charge of telling me what I can and can not achieve with my disability. I am the one having to live with a disability so now I am the one who is in charge achieving my goals.
My injury has never stopped me from being a normal woman, I just do things a little different. I work, go to college, shop, party, date, laugh, and cry just as millions of other woman do. Its a true passion of mine to let every young adult female with a disability know that your world does not have to stop because movement in a part of your body did. It is up to us to let the world know that we are beautiful, strong minded, women with a voice. When I go out (which is all the time) I constantly deal with the stares and comments from strangers but I have learned that people are just in awe of what they don't know. But there's nothing to fear, Asha Toure will help ease the minds all who wonder about woman with disabilities even if I have to do it one curious mind at a time.
